Schiermonnikoog National Park

Schiermonnikoog is the most northerly of the inhabited Dutch Wadden Sea islands. Its eastern point is perhaps the only pristine nature area remaining in the Netherlands. Here, wind and water sculpt an ever-changing landscape. Cars are prohibited on the island making this a paradise for cyclists and walkers as well as birdwatchers, particularly in the migratory season during spring and autumn.

Park’s main features: Dunes, salt marshes, North Sea beach, the eastern part changing daily with the wind and waves
Special flora: Different types of orchid, autumn gentian, grass-of-parnassus, glasswort, sea lavender and thrift
Special fauna: Rare breeding birds such as spoonbill, hen harrier and short-eared owl and other waders, geese, seals and harbour porpoise
Recreational activities: Cycling, walking, bird watching
