Lauwersmeer National Park

Just forty thirty years ago, this estuary was part of the Wadden Sea. Fear of a major flood resulted in the construction of a dike to close the estuary and protect the region from the destructive forces of the sea. The dike was completed in 1969. The estuary became a wetland. Rare bird species can be sighted here. Highland cattle, konik horses and traditional landrace cows and horses graze the fields to prevent shrub encroachment.
