Drents-Friese Wold National Park

On the border of the provinces of Friesland and Drenthe lies Drents-Friese Wold National Park. Within this extensive area of woodland and heath lie the shifting sands of Aekingerzand, a restored stream valley and the Grenspoel bog pool and the beautiful moorlands of Doldersum and Wapse. Many rare plant and animal species live in the park.

Special flora: Creeping ladies tresses, pieris floribunda, broad-leaved helleborine
Special fauna: Rare butterflies like the alcon blue, silver-studded blue, the pine marten and great crested newt
Recreational activities: Cycling, walking (130 km of footpath, 30 routes) riding (75 km of bridle paths), bird watching, excursions (watch towers on Doldersumerveld and Aekingerzand).
